Tryout Information

In order to qualify for Dance Company tryouts in the spring, a student must currently be a 6th, 7th or 8th grader.  He or she must be in good standing at North Davis Preparatory Academy with at least a 2.5 on second trimester grades and no F’s. There will be a three-day clinic held prior to tryouts in which a short dance number will be demonstrated by a choreographer and then demonstrated at the end of tryouts. There will also be a few across the floor combinations, such as a leap combination, to show off technique.  Attendance is mandatory. If a student is aware of any scheduling conflicts, they are to let the coaches know a week before tryouts so they can make accommodations for the student.

There is a $5 judging fee.  This fee must be paid before or on the day of tryouts, or the student is not eligible for tryouts.  Judging will be conducted by a panel of qualified judges, including present and, if applicable, future coaches.  Tryouts will be held in the spring, around the end of March or beginning of April. They will be held on a Friday promptly at 1:25 pm in the gymnasium.

If there are a large number of students who make the team that become ineligible, that are dismissed from the company early in the summer, or that become unavailable to dance with the company for any reason, or if there are not as many members as normally would be put on team, the coach may hold a secondary try-outs if necessary.  Present members at that time will not be cut from the team, but tryouts will be open to all students following the above criteria.

Each student trying out in the fall will need to provide:
·      A completed try-out contact information sheet
·      A copy of 2nd trimester grades
·      A 4x6 or 5x7 head shot identification picture
·      A $5 judging fee

How-To Videos

Some of the girls were asking about the basic ballet positions the coaches keep saying during practice. That is what is being demonstrated in this video:  the five basic ballet positions.

Calypso or Attitude leaps.  We do these quite often in Dance Company, so please practice them at home.

A basic relevé balance

Tilt developés, tilt kicks or side-split kicks.

Yes, this is a ballet pirouette, but it will give you the basic idea for our jazz pirouettes.  There is only one difference:  your passé leg is turned in.

Arm strengthening exercises

Another ballet position that would be good to stick in your heads.

This is a single tour, and yes, we do chaînés before these usually.

Another arm strengthening exercise.
